Where to Actually See and Play in Snow in Kashmir

Gulmarg is Kashmir's most reliable snow destination, sitting at around 2,650 metres. Heavy snowfall is common from late December through February, making it the best place for first-time snow experiences, sledding, snow tubing, snowman-building, skiing, and riding the famous Gulmarg Gondola.

Sonamarg offers higher altitude scenery centred around the Thajiwas Glacier. Snow here can be deeper and even more dramatic than Gulmarg, although accessibility depends on weather conditions, especially after heavy snowfall.

Pahalgam also receives snowfall, although generally less consistently than Gulmarg. We include it for its beautiful mountain scenery and peaceful atmosphere rather than as the main destination for a dedicated snow holiday.

Doodhpathri is one of Kashmir's quieter snow-covered valleys and an excellent optional extension for travellers looking to avoid the crowds while enjoying peaceful winter landscapes.

Srinagar occasionally receives light snowfall during winter, creating beautiful scenery around Dal Lake and the Mughal Gardens. However, snowfall here is never guaranteed, so we treat it as a welcome bonus rather than the main reason to visit.

Best Time to See Snow in Kashmir

November marks the beginning of the snow season. Early snowfall sometimes appears at higher elevations, although conditions remain unpredictable and snow is not guaranteed.

December brings steadily increasing snowfall, especially during the second half of the month. Christmas and New Year are popular periods, so hotels and flights become busier.

January is our top recommendation for Malaysian travellers seeking snow. Snowfall is highly reliable, Gulmarg usually has excellent snow depth, and winter activities are in full swing.

February continues to offer excellent snow conditions with slightly fewer crowds than the festive season. Skiing conditions remain excellent, although occasional road closures are possible after heavy snowfall.

March sees snow gradually melting at lower elevations, while Gulmarg's higher slopes often continue to offer good snow for visitors wanting a late-season experience.

If your main goal is experiencing real snowfall, we generally recommend travelling during January or February, when snow coverage is at its most reliable throughout Gulmarg and the surrounding mountains.

Malaysia to Kashmir Flights Guide

There are no direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Srinagar, so every journey includes at least one transit. The most common route is via Delhi, followed by a domestic flight to Srinagar with airlines such as Air India or IndiGo. Total journey time is usually around 10–13 hours, depending on your connection.

Travelling via Mumbai is another popular option, while flights through Dubai with Emirates provide a more comfortable layover but usually increase total travel time to around 14–18 hours.

For January and February snow holidays, we recommend booking flights at least two to three months in advance, as these are Kashmir's busiest months for travellers specifically chasing snowfall.

Although we don't book international flights directly, we're happy to recommend suitable routes and coordinate your airport transfers once you share your preferred travel dates.

How to Apply for an Indian e-Visa from Malaysia

Malaysian citizens need an Indian e-Visa to visit Kashmir, and the entire application is completed online through the official Government of India website. We recommend applying two to three weeks before your departure, especially if you're travelling during the busy January and February snow season.

We can provide hotel confirmations and your complete itinerary to support your visa application if required. However, we do not process visas ourselves, so always verify the latest visa rules and fees on the official Government of India website before applying.

Hotels & Houseboats for a Snow Tour

For a snow-season trip, heating quality matters more than almost anything else when choosing accommodation. A hotel that feels perfectly comfortable in summer may not provide the warmth you need during January or February, which is why we personally recommend only properties that perform well during the coldest months.

Our carefully selected 3-star heated hotels are clean, comfortable, and ideal for most Malaysian travellers, generally costing around MYR 180 to MYR 280 per room per night within a package. They provide dependable heating, hot water, and easy access to Srinagar's main attractions.

Our preferred 4-star hotels offer larger rooms, better dining, improved mountain or lake views, and more consistent heating performance during peak winter. These typically range between MYR 280 and MYR 450 per room per night, depending on travel dates and location.

Travellers seeking maximum comfort often choose premium properties such as the Taj Dal View or The Lalit Grand Palace. These 5-star hotels provide reliable central heating, spacious rooms, excellent restaurants, and premium service, with rates generally starting from MYR 500 per room per night.

A traditional houseboat remains one of Kashmir's most memorable experiences, even during snow season. However, I'll be honest that heating inside most houseboats is naturally weaker than in modern hotels during deep winter. For that reason, we usually recommend one houseboat night as part of the experience before moving to a heated hotel for the remainder of your stay.

Traditional Kashmiri cuisine, including the famous Wazwan feast, is naturally halal and built around lamb, chicken, rice, and local spices. Pork is not part of Kashmiri Muslim cuisine, so dining during your trip is usually straightforward without needing special arrangements.

Mosques are available throughout every destination on the main snow circuit, from the historic Jamia Masjid and Hazratbal Shrine in Srinagar to neighbourhood mosques near Gulmarg and Sonamarg. Kashmiri Kahwa, prepared with saffron, cardamom, almonds, and spices, quickly becomes a favourite during winter. Most of our snow-tour guests end up drinking far more Kahwa than they expected because it genuinely helps warm you after several hours outdoors.

If you prefer vegetarian food, Dum Aloo is an excellent local speciality, while freshly baked Kashmiri Naan pairs well with almost every traditional dish served during your holiday.

Winter is one of the best times to shop in Kashmir because many of the region's famous products are genuinely useful during the colder months. A quality Pashmina shawl isn't simply a souvenir—it's something you'll probably wear throughout your trip. Genuine pashmina feels exceptionally soft but never slippery like synthetic fabric.

Kashmir is also famous for its premium saffron. Authentic saffron has a strong aroma and a slightly bitter taste, so we recommend buying from established shops rather than roadside stalls. If you're unsure, we're always happy to recommend trusted stores we've worked with for years.

Dry fruits, particularly walnuts and almonds, are excellent gifts because they're easy to pack and generally offer good value. Handmade papier-mâché items, walnut wood carvings, and traditional handicrafts are also popular purchases among Malaysian visitors.

Prices are usually negotiable, and comparing two or three shops before making a purchase almost always gives you a better understanding of fair local pricing.

Local Transportation Guide

Throughout Kashmir we use private AC Innovas, SUVs, or Tempo Travellers depending on your group size. During snow season we generally prefer SUVs for routes towards Gulmarg and Sonamarg because they're better suited to winter road conditions.

Driving times can change considerably after fresh snowfall. A journey that normally takes around 1.5 hours between Srinagar and Gulmarg may take noticeably longer if snow has accumulated overnight. Rather than rushing between attractions, we build these delays into your itinerary so your holiday remains relaxed.

Connectivity & Currency

Airtel and Jio SIM cards are available at Srinagar Airport after arrival. Mobile coverage is generally reliable in Srinagar and Gulmarg but becomes more limited in Doodhpathri and some remote valleys, so we recommend downloading offline maps before heading into the mountains.

Wi-Fi is available in the hotels we work with and is usually dependable for everyday use. Houseboats also provide Wi-Fi, although speeds can vary depending on weather and network conditions.

India's currency is the Indian Rupee (INR). Cash is still useful for local markets, snow activities, pony rides, and smaller shops where card payments may not always be accepted. Many Malaysian travellers also find they receive a better exchange rate by converting Ringgit before leaving Malaysia rather than after arriving in Kashmir.

Local Expert Tips for a Snow Tour

Leave for Gulmarg by around 8:00 AM during peak snow season. Gondola queues become much longer later in the morning, and an early departure often gives you an extra hour or more to actually enjoy the snow.

Book Gulmarg Gondola tickets in advance whenever possible. Phase 2 tickets towards Apharwat Peak frequently sell out on busy snow days, making same-day bookings unreliable.

Rent snow clothing locally instead of bringing bulky winter gear from Malaysia. Rental shops near the gondola base know exactly what equipment suits the day's weather, and travelling with lighter luggage makes your flights much easier.

Dress in layers rather than wearing one extremely heavy jacket. Snow activities such as sledding, tubing, and building snowmen generate more body heat than most first-time visitors expect, making layered clothing much more comfortable.

Always agree on the price with pony owners or sledge operators before starting the activity. Confirming the cost upfront avoids misunderstandings later.

Avoid squeezing your only snow experience between two long drives. We deliberately allow plenty of unhurried time in Gulmarg so you can actually enjoy playing in the snow instead of constantly watching the clock.

Finally, always carry an extra pair of dry socks and gloves. Wet hands and feet end a great snow day much faster than the cold itself.

Rather than filling your suitcase with bulky snow clothing, we recommend renting specialised snow gear such as snowsuits, waterproof trousers, ski boots, and ski equipment locally in Gulmarg. Local rental shops know exactly what suits the day's weather and snow conditions.

One small item many first-time snow travellers overlook is extra socks. Carry several pairs of dry socks separately from your checked luggage because wet feet are easily the most common discomfort during a full day in the snow.

Safety Guide

From our day-to-day experience operating tours in Kashmir, we consider it a safe destination for international visitors, including Malaysian families, couples, and solo travellers. That said, it's always better to discuss safety honestly rather than pretend no risks exist.

In April 2025, a terrorist attack in Pahalgam tragically killed 26 people, most of them tourists. Security around Kashmir's major tourist destinations has since been strengthened considerably, and tourism has steadily recovered. Around the first anniversary of the incident, Malaysian tour leader Mohammad Fadli travelled with a group of 21 Malaysian visitors to Pahalgam and publicly shared that his group felt comfortable and safe throughout their visit. We mention this simply as one recent example, not as a guarantee.

During 2026, the Gulmarg Gondola was temporarily closed for around one month after a technical fault resulted in a major rescue operation. It reopened after inspections and manufacturer certification. Experiences like this are exactly why we always check current operating conditions before planning your snow day instead of assuming every attraction will automatically be available.

Winter weather creates more practical challenges than security for most travellers. Heavy snowfall can temporarily close mountain roads or reduce visibility, so we never hesitate to adjust an itinerary if conditions become unsafe. We'd rather delay sightseeing than take unnecessary risks.

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance that includes emergency medical evacuation and checking your government's latest travel advice before departure, since official guidance can change more quickly than information published on tourism websites.
